This looks like a bug in Xwindows or a hardware detection issue rather than any new design needed. Fonts are already scaled by the correct amount so they appear the correct size on a screen. In other words, a 12 point font is 12 / 72nds of an inch tall no matter if you are in 640 x 480 or 1800 x 1600, at least provided that X can detect the physical size of the monitor from its EDID correctly.
