Fresh install of Ubuntu-Mate 14.10 - i386. after the install I let the software updater do its thing. after the restart I went to the software centre and searched for steam. it seemed to download the starter file properly, but during the install the software centre locked up. System Monitor showed no abnormal cpu or memory usage.
