Had to install Lubuntu 12.04 on a VM for some task at hand and stumbled across the same issue. Solution given in #5 works perfectly but it still baffles me how such a bug can exists for such a long time (bug was reported in 2012 now we are reaching slowly the end of 2014). If I user is not familiar with the way bug tracking is working and does not know that he/she might be able to find some valuable information here on bugs.launchpad.net, he/she can't install Lubuntu using the normal installation because due to this ubiquity thing the installer simply breaks and 1)leaves you with a half-way completed installation and 2)leaves you with a system that you cannot use and have to erase both of which require additional time.
