I verified this just now using gmtp instead of the default Ubuntu mtp
tools.  Gmtp can't see the device either, after it has been unplugged
and idle for 15 minutes, and it doesn't get hung up on gvfs issues so
it's usually much more reliable.

After a reboot, /usr/bin/mtp-server is normally running, but after being
unplugged and idle for 15 minutes it wasn't running any more.  I saw
only the kernel's [f_mtp] process still going, which isn't sufficient to
make mtp function.
