Things are better with 2.6.22-11 for sure!! The machine now resumes to a usable state - I can log in again and everything EXCEPT the built-in speakers are working. This has been an issue with this machine with various kernel versions - the long and the short of it is the built-in audio amplifier doesn't get powered up after resume.
