I have done the following:
sudo apt-get install mcrypt
sudo apt-get install php5-mcrypt
sudo ln -s /etc/php5/fpm/conf.d/20-mcrypt.ini
/etc/php5/mods-available/mcrypt.ini
sudo php5enmod mcrypt
I then have restarted php-fpm (and actually restarted nginx as well,
just in case)
When i go to the page with the mcrypt functions i get the following in
the log:

phpinfo shows the authors of mcrypt, but that's the only entry
Also:
$ php5-fpm -m|grep mcrypt
mcrypt
$ sudo apt-cache policy php5-mcrypt
php5-mcrypt:

So it's there, but just doesn't do anything.
