phil, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. A few issues
were noticed:
1) You have PPA sources registered. Offending lines:
2014-11-29 23:53:04,474 DEBUG examining: 'deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ffmulticonverter/stable/ubuntu lucid main'
2014-11-29 23:53:04,477 DEBUG examining: 'deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main'
First, you will need to remove all software associated with these PPAs.
Then, you will want to purge these sources altogether (not rely on them
being disabled). If this doesn't allow you to upgrade, please see the
next item.
2) You installed GUI packages on a server instance. As the server build
was designed specifically for command line only (not for installing a
GUI) you will want to purge all GUI related packages you installed
first, and then attempt the upgrade. If this doesn't work, please see
the next item.
3) You are using i386 for a server install. If the above doesn't work,
and you don't have any hardware or technical limitations, you might as
well take this opportunity to reinstall your server instance with the
x64 build of 14.04 (not 12.04 or i386). You would get better performance
from the x64 build, and benefit from the longer support time frame of
14.04, in comparison to 12.04.
