I'm horrified that it has been well over a year between this problem being reported and the first non-automated response from Ubuntu. Yes, this problem still exists on Ubuntu 14.10, but I have managed to implement a workaround. If I disable the Nvidia graphics card in BIOS, and use the Intel graphics card instead, the problem goes away. This means that I can't play games on the laptop, but given how appallingly slow Ubuntu is to respond, I see no point in pursuing this bug report any further. I'll probably have replaced the laptop before anything is done about this. As far as I'm concerned, this bug report can be closed.
