After most recent upgrade (only one package: xubuntu-base), the mouse
works again. Not sure why. Looked into /var/log/dpkg.log but didn't see
anything kernel-related or of obvious relevance to the usb systems:

Since I don't know if anyone will ever be able to duplicate this, and
since I have no idea how to figure out what caused it, and since it's no
longer happening, I will close this bug for now.
