I also have the problem on an Asus tower computer running 14.04 all by itself (no dual boot, no windows). I have found that I can get the speakers to work (at reduced volume) by leaving the headphones plugged into the headphone jack on the computer. Removing the headphones from the jack also kills the sound to the external speakers. Note that my computer seems to have at least four audio out jacks on the back and sound is not produced using the standard green jack.
