is the only error i detect in the system logs.
(The scanner a fitjitsu 6110 works perfectly on a usb2 ubuntu 12.04 system with
no driver added.)
if i re-plug it and type:
steve@skc:/tmp$ scanimage -L
device `fujitsu:fi-6110dj:28760' is a FUJITSU fi-6110dj scanner
steve@skc:/tmp$ scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
re-plug it back and type:
steve@skc:/tmp$ scanimage
scanimage: open of device fujitsu:fi-6110dj:28760 failed: Error during device
I/O
while i'm getting the error on scanning, i'm not sure this is a usb2 usb3
xhci_hcd issue
dmesg for the usb:

even though a 'no find scanner' after the error the lsusb above remains
the same.
as for what i expected:
on 12.04 i simply plugged in the scanner and it worked... now it doesn't
