Public bug reported:

After the ubuntu update manager had installed updates that required reboot,
unity failed to start after booting.
I am using VMWare (running under windows 8.1 on an HP laptop with a radeon
graphics card and an i7 processor) with ubutuntu 14.04.

So far the only way to work-around this is to install the xubuntu
desktop xfce.

In the log I could see that unity reported an error in that it failed to
load the opengl plugin.
