I have finally resolved this issue. The problem was not something in grub2. Rather there was an issue with the BIOS. I managed to get Ubuntu Mate 14.04 to boot - until I did did a kernel update. The PC would no longer boot. Just on a hunch I popped out and replaced the button battery and let the BIOS return to factory default. I then booted the PC, set the date and time and let the machine discover the hard drive etc. It now boots fine.
