I have finally resolved this issue.  The problem was not something in
grub2. Rather there was an issue with the BIOS.  I managed to get Ubuntu
Mate 14.04 to boot - until I did did a kernel update. The PC would no
longer boot. Just on a hunch I popped out and replaced the button
battery and let the BIOS return to factory default. I then booted the
PC, set the date and time and let the machine discover the hard drive
etc.  It now boots fine.

Please feel free to close this bug as resolved/not a grub2 issue.
