Public bug reported:

I've noticed recently that VLC seems to be only outputting mono audio
when the input audio file is stereo (mp3, aac, etc). Comparing the
output between VLC and Audacious on files with heavy stereo mixing makes
this problem very evident, VLC seems to be just downmixing the stereo
tracks into a single channel. > 2 channel audio (such as the soundtrack
on a 5.1 channel movie) doesn't seem to have this problem.

I've doublechecked that there's no audio plugins enabled (especially not
the headphone spatializer or mono plugins), but the issue persists.
