  after updating the package sources and confirming that the extras
  sources are unavailable, the update-manager just exits.

+ WORKAROUND: 1) Open Software Sources
+ 2) Go to 'Other Software' tab
+ 3) Uncheck both checkboxes for "Independent"
+
