Public bug reported: This issue that synaptic fails with the error message in the title has been reported as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/379568 and mentioned that the solution is to run `sudo update-apt-xapian-index` which doesn't work in general, but it shouldn't be necessary for the user to intervene anyway. The feedback needs to be improved (don't print an message, but instructions on how to fix the issue or even better let `synaptic` run the commands).
