It deactivates the connection, according to iwevent the address is Not- Associated and it sets the essid to "" and the encryption key to off. The interface is still working and I can still see the network list from nm-applet.
I suppose what I would like is for more feedback from Network Manager, I just wasn't sure whether this is a Debian/Ubuntu issue or an upstream NM issue.
