I also got bitten by this bug after updating from ubuntu gnome 14.04 to 14.10. I tried switching to the systemd init system but this did not work either so I reverted to upstart. However using the last kernel from 14.04 works and the system becomes usable again. I am only mentioning it because it has not yet been mentioned in the comments to this bug.
