I still have the same problem. Grep-ing my logs, I find that it started
after a reboot on Sep 10. I did upgrade to the latest Gutsy and even did
a reinstall of the apparmor packages ... of no avail. Yes, I did reload
the kernel module and reboot.

After some playing with profiles, I find they do work with just 'r', 'w', 'l' 
and 'Ux' flags, and it starts to break when another flag is added.
$ uname -a
Linux <me> 2.6.22-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Sep 7 04:31:16 GMT 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ dpkg -l | grep -i appar
