I have got this problem upgrading three machines from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10, two nVidia, one AMD. It's now not possible to log into the AMD one - the desktop is missing and the system is frozen not responding to anything. I have switched to XFCE on that machine and its working fine. The nVidia machines freeze after about 10 mins on standard graphics. They are almost usable if I use the nVidia drivers, but then after 10 minutes the background will stop updating so that moving any windows around leaves an annoying trail, and when minimizing a window it appears as if it is still there. I don't if any of that is related to this bug or not. I'm also suffering from bug 1359439. All in all, this update has been a complete disaster.
