Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I attempted to use the Ubuntu daily build 20070911 of Gutsy Gibbon 7.10
pre-release (alternate install disk for amd64) on a new ThinkPad R61
laptop with manual partitioning, with english keyboard and locale
selection. Installation went well, but halfway through the package
install step, all the characters on the screen (including the ASCI-based
progress bar) switched to multi-colored ASCI-like small boxes instead of
characters. The progress, packages being installd, and on-screen
instructions were unreadable, and it was impossible to tell when the
process was done. Everything was fine after I allowed the installation
to finish and the computer rebooted. When I used Ctl-Alt-F1 to switch
to other virtual terminals, their text was similarly garbled.

I’ll test the daily build tonight (20070914) and see if the bug is still
there.
