Wondering if it's courier or something else, I installed dovecot imap. It is having the same issue.
I rebooted and did an fsck on the drives and got no errors. My Maildir is 5.8 GB Renaming my Maildir to Maildir.old and then running maildirmake Maildir allows evolution and thunderbird to access the now-empty mail store without any trouble. I also ran maildiracl -reset Maildir which had no effect.
