Thanks for the suggestions on fixing the 2 finger scrolling;  the
SoftButtonAreas option has other, more irritating side effects, so for
now I'll just retrain my fingers.

I've re-enabled the debug messages for i8042, and started looking
through them, trying to spot a pattern around the issue 1 described
above.  i8042 codes keep coming even though the pointer is frozen, so
now I'd like to try to interpret them; my google-fu has failed me
though-  does anyone have a resource for the interpretation of the bytes
that are getting sent from the clickpad?
