"getent" might be useful here. But if I understand the problem correctly, I'd say that it's a hack and that init should know when ldap is ready and not start dependents until then.
Or, hold dependents until it is ready. I believe the current best answer is "socket activation" but I don't know whether that would need changes within slapd.
