This is indeed fixed upstream as per http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.scanning.sane.devel/4240/focus=9897 and apparently so since 2005. According to the mailI wonder why the change is not in ubuntu. Can you include the output of "sudo dpkg -l libsane*", please?
