This is due to a YouTube API change on June 25th, 2014,  and was fixed
upstream over 10 months ago.  You now need version 2014.05.25 for some
YouTube videos:

    https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/issues/3754

But for "universe" Ubuntu packages like this, upgrades may never come.
So this is probably one of those packages where switching to a more
direct install might make more sense.  E.g. in this case:

    sudo apt-get remove youtube-dl

    sudo pip install --upgrade youtube_dl

which will install it in /usr/local/bin
