Thanks for your response. With those solutions,: 1.) This keeps failing on me, so I filed an additional bug report about it (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1432164), as encouraged by this guide (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD).
2.) I did this, and so far, so good for the light web browsing I'm doing.
