Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu MATE 14.10 onto an Acer 1410 and an Acer Aspire One
521.

Everything seemed to work fine, including restoring data from an
external USB 2 HDD. I later needed to restore some data from an external
USB 3.0 HDD and connected it to the USB 2 socket as had always been
normal practice. On both computers the HDD was recognised on the
computer view (computer:///) but it could not be mounted.

I connected the offending HDD to another computer running Mint 17.1,
again using a USB 2 port, and the disk mounted OK. There was clearly no
problem with the HDD.

On both Acers running Ubuntu MATE I tried rebooting with the USB 3.0 HDD
connected but that made no difference. Recognition of the HDD was the
best I could achieve - impossible to mount.

I connected USB 2 memory sticks and they mounted without problems.
