I can confirm this bug as well - after installing the updates this morning and 
restarting gsd no longer works. Running it in a terminal gives a similar error 
to Ryan's.
I suspect that this may have something to do with the capplets update - some 
poking around online reveals that its updates have broken g-s-d before. This 
does not appear to be an issue with the kernel update - I tried with a previous 
version and got the same result.

 The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 1478 error_code 2 request_code 147 minor_code 35)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
