Yes, I fixed the problem (as I described above), so now I can boot
without any problems. I have not tried to re-install the operating
system, so I don't know if the install process would still find the
drives and names them the same way.  I have not tried to recreate the
initial problem, since it would require me to reinstall Ubuntu.
