No I didn't install apparmor-profiles from the universe before updating. I just ran the update through update-manager and after the restart X failed.
I then ran aptitude and it said, apparmor and apparmor-utils were broken, but when I tried to update it was getting failed to write errors.The same errors came up when update-manager was running. Looking at the log file, it looks like I got my X11 errors because apparmor failed to write.
