> Denys, the info at the link you provide seems to relate more to
running the gui hp-setup; or am I missing something?

yes, you get an error when you run hp-setup GUI. I also get errors that
you are describing happening behind the scenes, but I believe it's the
same kind of error.

Since reporting this bug, I tried HPLIP on Ubuntu 14.10 and discovered
that exactly the same problem happens there. When I went to HPLIP
website, it said it supports Ubuntu 14.10 in the version 3.14.10 of
HPLIP. Ubuntu official repository only offered 3.14.6, and presumably
that's why it couldn't work.

So I downloaded HPLIP 3.14.14 from their website, and ran their
installer, and everything worked fine.

Given above story, I think what will happen with Ubuntu Vivid is that
nothing will get fixed until HPLIP people release a version that
supports Vivid. It may or may not make its way into official Ubuntu
repos soon, so you will probably need to monitor HPLIP website and
download their installer as soon as they say Ubuntu Vivid is supported.
