About bug link above, I fully understand how /boot can fill up, but
can't it just not under / (not a "small partition")? Would that have
happened with a new install (not update)? Size of/separate /boot may
have been "self-inflicted". I do not remember any more if I chose it/its
size.

Related, some recommend separate /home (better for reinstallations).
That one is under / and I do not worry too much, not sure I agree with
separation. Any policy or default on this in Ubuntu? Has it changed
lately? May or may not have implications for full-disk encryption? I
guess you can live with all such decisions for long across many
updates..
