Simon, you may have more success using a Unity live environment, versus
KDE.

As well, if it's a BIOS problem, it would be best to start with the
latest, unmodified BIOS from the vendor (despite it appearing to be
older/buggy), as they tend not to indulge BIOS "modifications".
