I just installed the 4.0 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/ on my 14.04 system and so far things are much better! `iwconfig` used to report 1 Mb/s and now it reports 54 Mb/s.
