Errors about unix_socket usually mean that your configuration in /etc/mysql/ does not contain the plugin loading stanza. Something is messed up in your configuration that the automatic upgraded wasn't able to resolve. What does 'ls -la /etc/mysql' show? What is the contents of your main configuration file /my.cnf or mariadb.cnf)?
