Same issue here, Ubuntu 14.04 64 bits on a Toshiba Portege Z30-A 18J, custom kernel 3.18.11 64 bits though. I suspect it has something to do with certain processes running on the system, such as perhaps Nautilus, but no hard evidence. The problem only occurs after a long uptime duration. Strace gives the same result as #5 mentioned.
