Root cause seems to be that I had this system (grandma pc) on autoupdate and now the dev\sda1 was 100% full. Fixing this for a novice is an exiting experience and some self-preservation could be nice as a built- in feature. Like asking when a new kernel is available if I would like to remove the oldest kernel or similar. I removed old kernel versions and the dev\ sda1 went from 100% to less then 30% full. My case is ok now for the most parts I can verify, doing an upgrade to newer version and looking for some janitor software \ routine to check the hd space.
