which refers to this bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341963 the solution sugggested there is to clear the contents of ~/.cache/ and to check if there is sufficient free space. Just did that, and it seems to have fixed the problem atleast for now - will wait and see if it crashes again.
