Pete's suggestion is also what OS X does: whenever you open the menu, it
triggers a scan, with the first menu item saying "Wi-Fi: Looking for
networks…" until the scan completes. When I suggested the same for
Ubuntu a couple of years ago, I was told (by Mathieu, I think?) that it
wouldn't apply to Network Manager because it is constantly scanning in
the background. Is that still the case, or did I misremember, or has the
behavior changed since?
