Thank you all for the thorough testing. As with the results of #61, the intial problem is solved with the right combination of settings. While prepering this patch to be brought into master it became clear there are still some corner cases with this patch before it is ready. Meanwhile this patch will do fine. If (new) usability issues appear, these can be handled in other reports.
As to backporting, I've tried backporting (this or another patch) to the 14.10 version.
