Some additional info: nm-applet is not just disappearing when changing
networks, it will also disappear after resuming from sleep. I have found
an interim workaround:

sciri@iko:~$ sudo service network-manager stop; sudo service network-
manager start

That will at least get the nm-applet icon back without rebooting. I've
changed the title accordingly.

** Summary changed:

- nm-applet icon disappears from menu bar requiring reboot to get back.
+ nm-applet icon disappears from menu bar requiring 'sudo service
network-manager stop; sudo service network-manager start' to get back.
