It seems, binlogs were missing when you start the server after --copy back. It might be related to this. http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=51014 the "fix" is in 5.7, and we have older version, so maybe it crashes.
For further investigation, Can you provide some more information like, 1. How many nodes in this PXC cluster? All have the same version of PXC? 2. Provide complete error log, my.cnf and backup-my.cnf 3.
