Problem occurs with up-to-date Ubuntu 14.04.2 on Dell Inspiron 7348. Ctrl+Alt+F2 and service lightdm restart does the trick (with work lost of course).
1. Do you use a multi-head setup? If yes, using just one monitor fixes the issue? No multi-head 2. Can you reproduce all the time? If a session is opened, yes, apparently. If I loggout of session before closing the lid, it seems to work correctly 3. Do you use ldap? If yes, using gnome-screensaver fix the issue (see comment #115) can you still reproduce that? No 4. Please consider posting /var/log/auth.log (at least part of it, should not contain sensitive information) OK, posted as attachement 5.
