My mysql instance was failing to start in my VM instance (Ubuntu 15.04). So I uninstalled mysql-server then removed /var/lib/mysql /var/log/mysql /etc/mysql.
I had hoped that a clean re-install would fix the startup problem, but now I have another problem due to this bug.
