Public bug reported: When connecting to a vpn using Cisco AnyConnect (version 3.1.08009) on Ubuntu 15.04, the client passively consumes about 600 KiB of data per second over the network. It is certainly the AnyConnect client, because the data flow stops when the vpn is disconnected or the service is restarted (for instance, using systemd).
The data transmitted is mostly TCP window update packets and corresponding acknowledgements. I have been in contact with my network administrators and they see no more than a few dozen connections over about 10 minutes, while my TCP dump shows hundreds of megabytes of data being transmitted over the same period. This problem did not exist on Ubuntu 14.10 or earlier. I have also tested vpnc on Xubuntu 14.04 LTS, and the problem does not exist. The problems were initially present on AnyConnect version 3.1.05182, and were not solved in the recent (a month or so ago) update. $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 15.04 Release: 15.04 $ apt-cache policy vpnc vpnc: Installed: 0.5.3r550-2 Candidate: 0.5.3r550-2 Version table: *** 0.5.3r550-2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ vivid/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04 Package: vpnc 0.5.3r550-2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.19.0-16.16-generic 3.19.3 Uname: Linux 3.19.0-16-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.17.2-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Thu Jun 4 22:34:40 2015 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-06-14 (720 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release amd64 (20130424) SourcePackage: vpnc UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to vivid on 2015-04-27 (39 days ago) modified.conffile..etc.vpnc.default.conf: [deleted] ** Affects: vpnc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug vivid ** Description changed: When connecting to a vpn using Cisco AnyConnect (version 3.1.08009) on Ubuntu 15.04, the client passively consumes about 600 KiB of data per second over the network.
