Public bug reported:

I'm not able to change the resolution of my VM with Trusty without
editing the Xorg.conf and so on.

This should (and had!) work out-of-the-box!

Maybe this is a problem cause the installed VB on the host is *not* the 
original package but from Oracle direct.
In another VM with xubutnu 15.04 it works as expected!
