Thanks for the response.
I think there were a series of problems in this multi-day effort.
The iso images (I tried 14.4 and 15.4) I got from the Ubuntu d/l site were
corrupt - during the lenghty d/l process.  I didn't check the file size or I
may have know that immediately - I have no clue how to verify the MD5 checksum,
just another stupid amateur.
After using one corrupted image I lost Ubuntu altogether.  No prob, I still had
WinXP.
Since I was now using a different usb 'burner' I suspect the second problem was
not being able to create a "bootable" memory stick.  I think some programs
merely copy the files and don't make the stick bootable.
I purchased a new stick (faster, yay) in all this experimentation.  That didn't
help at all.
I eventually got the original stick to boot and installed both 15.4 (1.19
kernel) and 14.4 (LTS, 3.16 kernel) installed.
Both produce the same result - black screen of death (or desktop lock-up but
with mouse movement).
Since I switched to Ubuntu from Lubuntu I can't find Synaptic before the
lock-up occurs.  Where did the damn menus go?
I wanted to find Synaptic to try to install kernel 3.5.  That the one where
everything seems to work just fine.
The bottom line? Since my 'puter is almost 10 years old I think I'll shop for
another one.  I think a decent refurb can be had for $250.
It will come with Windows installed.  At 62 years old I really don't want to
play with an unstable Linux any more.  Besides, I understand Win 10 will be a
free upgrade.  Perhaps Microsoft will be making the best OS again.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

Subject: [Bug 1465072] Re: failed to Install

Your installation medium is corrupt.  You will need to recreate it and
should then verify it using the check disc option from the boot menu.
If you have done this more than once already then the usb stick must be
bad and you'll need a new one.
