My best solutions to the MythBuntu/XBMC/Kodi usecase: 1) Run a MythBuntu/XBMC/Kodi-session without any desktop at all! They're in /usr/share/xsessions/ for running completely standalone.
2) Running a really minimal WM that doesn't try to manage screens at all like Openbox.
