Recent versions of the openlayers plugin require a recent version of qgis than the version 2.0 provided in ubuntu trusty. You may want to upgrade to version 2.8.1 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
